On hospitals . . .

It looked about like this
It looked about like this
I recently took quite ill and after many hours manning my post on the bathroom floor getting worse and worse I ended up going to the hospital. I didn't want to go, but eventually it became clear that I needed treatment. The doctors decided that I needed to stay the night because of the state I was in; so not only did I get my first IV and my first dose of injected Morphine, I got my first night in a hospital as well.

The strangest thing about staying a night in the hospital is the close camaraderie you develop with your cell mate. I didn't know the guy with whom I shared a room, and I couldn't really see him most of the time, but you learn the most private details about the other person because you're in the same room for medical discussion, separated by a curtain. I talked to him about why he was there, why I was there, where he was from and what he does. He overheard my private phone calls and discussions and I overheard his.

I hope Dave is doing well today after his procedure and that the birthday he spent yesterday in the GW hospital wasn't too bad. I guess I probably won't see him again. But if I did, I suspect we would great each other like old friend.

An artist and a housewife

This was not created by a ad agency or a movie production studio, rather, an incredibly talented housewife on her home computer.

Brave new world

“We need to recognize we can’t kill the instinct that technology produces, we can only criminalize it. We can’t stop our kids from using it, we can only drive it underground. We can’t make our kids passive again, we can only make them “pirates.” Is that good?

We live in this weird time, an “age of prohibitions,” where in many areas of our lives we live life constantly against the law. Ordinary people live life against the law, and that’s what we are doing to our kids, they live life knowing they live it against the law. That realization is extraordinarily corrosive, extraordinarily corruptive, and in a democracy, we ought to be able to do better.”

Lawrence Lessig—TED 2007

An anthropological introduction to YouTube
This is a lecture by Professor Michael Wesch given to the Library of Congress. It is incredibly fascinating and deeply profound. It's 55 minutes long so you don't want to watch it at work, but watch it.
